For the complete and planned development of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority was
incorporated, by the Uttar Pradesh Government on 30th November 1989 under Uttar Pradesh Industrial Development Act 1976.
GIDA under its development plan has a total area of 27,135 Acres. Currently the development plan has been subdivided in

Geographical & Demographic Information of Gorakhpur
At an elevation of 84 m with an area of 3483.8 Sq Km, Gorakhpur is situated along the banks of the Rapti River. Gorakhpur is 273 KM away from State Capital Lucknow, 100 KM away from the Nepal, 193 KM away from Varanasi and 260 KM away from Patna.
As of 2011 Indian Census Gorakhpur had a total population of 6,73,446 of which were 3,53,907 male and 3,19,539 were females. Gorakhpur has a literary rate of 75.2%.

Cultural and Historical Importance of Gorakhpur
Gorakhpur is associated with the Great Lord Buddha, founder of Buddhism. The 24th Tirthankar Lord Mahavir, founder of Jainism also has his roots associated with the Gorakhpur. Lord Gorakhnath took his Samadhi, the date of which is not fixed yet, in Gorakhpur. Sant Kabir travelled from Varanasi to Magahar, where he has worked for a very long time and gave the preaching to live in peace and religious harmony. The famous Chauri- Chaura event, which is considered as a turning point in the history of India’s struggle for freedom also happened in Gorakhpur.
